One Builds Muscle & Reduces Fat.
The Other Only Freezes Fat.

Emsculpt Neo and CoolSculpting® get lumped together as "non-invasive body contouring" — but they do fundamentally different things. Here's the fair, side-by-side truth, including where fat-freezing genuinely wins.

Fat + muscleEmsculpt Neo reduces ~30% fat and adds ~25% muscle.*
Fat onlyCoolSculpting freezes fat in one pinchable area — no muscle.

How Each One Actually Works

Emsculpt Neo · HIFEM+ & Radiofrequency

Building Muscle While Reducing Fat

A single applicator delivers two synchronized energies: radiofrequency warms and permanently reduces fat, while HIFEM+ (high-intensity focused electromagnetic energy) triggers about 20,000 supramaximal muscle contractions — far more than you could do voluntarily. The result is less fat and more muscle in the same 30 minutes.

  • Reduces fat and builds muscle together
  • 20,000 contractions per session
  • FDA-cleared; backed by 30+ studies
CoolSculpting® · Cryolipolysis

Freezing Fat Cells

A vacuum applicator draws a bulge of fat between cooling plates and holds it at a low temperature. Fat cells are more vulnerable to cold than skin or nerves, so they are damaged and, over the following weeks, cleared by the body. It is a fat-only treatment — nothing about it engages muscle.

  • Targets a single, pinchable bulge
  • Fat cells cleared gradually over weeks
  • No effect on muscle or tone

Why Muscle Changes the Whole Picture

Fat reduction alone makes an area smaller. Muscle is what creates shape — a flatter, firmer core or a lifted, rounder glute. Because CoolSculpting only removes fat, it can leave an area thinner but no more defined. Emsculpt Neo adds tone to the same session, which is why the "after" often looks sculpted rather than simply reduced. Both work best at or near your goal weight — think shaping and definition rather than weight loss.

Emsculpt Neo Makes Sense If…

  • You want definition and tone — not just a thinner fat layer.
  • You're rebuilding core or glute strength (postpartum, plateau, or athletic goals).
  • You prefer fewer total visits and zero downtime after each one.

CoolSculpting Makes Sense If…

  • You have one clear, pinchable pocket of fat and nothing else on the list.
  • You have no interest in muscle tone or core strength.
  • You'd rather sit through a passive applicator than do the work of contractions.

Both treatments are FDA-cleared and non-invasive. Any procedure carries risk; an in-person assessment with a qualified provider is the right way to weigh them for you.

So — Which One Is Right for You?

Choose Emsculpt Neo

if you want definition and tone alongside fat reduction, you're rebuilding core or glute strength, and you prefer fewer visits with zero downtime.

Choose fat-freezing

if you have a single, distinct pocket of pinchable fat, no interest in tone or strength, and you're happy to treat one area at a time.

We offer Emsculpt Neo, not CoolSculpting — so we have every reason to oversell it, and we won't. If fat-freezing is genuinely the better fit for your goal, we'll tell you at your consultation. That's a promise we can make because we'd rather you get the right result than the wrong treatment.

Emsculpt Neo vs. CoolSculpting FAQs

Which is better, Emsculpt Neo or CoolSculpting?

Neither is universally "better" — they do different jobs. CoolSculpting only reduces fat in one pinchable area. Emsculpt Neo reduces fat and builds muscle at the same time, so you get tone and definition rather than just a thinner fat layer. If your goal is a single stubborn bulge and nothing else, fat-freezing can fit; if you want shape, strength and definition, Emsculpt Neo is usually the better match. We'll help you decide at a consultation. Individual results vary.

What's the main difference between them?

Muscle. CoolSculpting is a fat-only treatment that freezes fat cells so the body clears them. Emsculpt Neo pairs radiofrequency fat reduction with HIFEM+ muscle contractions, so it builds muscle while reducing fat. That single difference changes the result — definition and tone versus a reduced fat layer alone.

How much do Emsculpt Neo and CoolSculpting cost on the North Shore?

Across medical spas in the Chicago North Shore and greater Chicago area, Emsculpt Neo generally runs about $750 to $1,200 per session, with a typical plan of six sessions. CoolSculpting is priced per applicator cycle and varies widely with the number of areas and cycles, so a full plan can span a broad range. Because we offer Emsculpt Neo and not CoolSculpting, we recommend confirming fat-freezing pricing directly with a provider that offers it. Actual cost is confirmed at a consultation.

Which one has more downtime?

Both are non-invasive with little to no downtime. After Emsculpt Neo you may feel workout-like muscle soreness for 24–48 hours. After CoolSculpting you may have temporary numbness, tingling, redness or swelling in the treated area that can last from days to a few weeks. Most people return to normal activities right away with either.

Is CoolSculpting dangerous?

CoolSculpting is FDA-cleared and generally considered safe. The most discussed uncommon risk is paradoxical adipose hyperplasia — a rare reaction where the treated fat area gradually enlarges instead of shrinking; it is rare, reported more often in men, and is corrected with liposuction or surgery if it occurs. Temporary numbness and altered sensation are more common and usually resolve. As with any procedure, an in-person assessment with a qualified provider is the right way to weigh the risks for you.

Which needs fewer sessions?

It depends on the area, but Emsculpt Neo follows a defined protocol of six 30-minute sessions and often reaches a full result in fewer total visits, because each session works fat and muscle at once. CoolSculpting treats one applicator area at a time and frequently needs repeat cycles per area, which can add up across multiple zones.

Do you offer CoolSculpting at DK Aesthetics?

No — we don't offer CoolSculpting. We chose Emsculpt Neo because it addresses fat and muscle together, which suits most of our clients' goals better than fat-freezing alone. We're happy to walk you through a clear, side-by-side comparison at your consultation so you can choose the right fit, even if that means a treatment we don't provide.

Can I do both Emsculpt Neo and CoolSculpting?

Usually you would choose one rather than combining them, because Emsculpt Neo already reduces fat while building muscle. Some people who have had fat-freezing later add Emsculpt Neo for the muscle and definition that fat reduction alone cannot provide. Your best sequence depends on your goals and is best mapped at a consultation. Individual results vary.
